Amy Norman was a normal middle-class Australian schoolgirl, who dreamed of being a ballet dancer. But, at the age of sixteen, she fell in with the wrong crowd. She dropped out of school and left her loving family for Dean, a man whose life was dominated by his addition to drugs.
Within three years she had had two children to him and had several traumatic abortions. She had become hooked on drugs herself and she was being beaten up every single day.
Amy desperately tried to escape Dean and return to her family. But each time she was forced to return to him after he threatened to kill her, her children and her parents. Finally, after years of living in fear, Amy took the children and spent a few years traveling around Australia, changing her identity frequently to avoid being found.

Couldn't put it down!
It really makes one think of where they are at in life compared to her experience when one is in a unhappy relationship, if not marriage. For myself, i can see myself in the emotional abuse, but then again, it makes me think if I'm lying to myself. I had two instances of abuse happen, one of which I ended up hospitalized and I took him back! This would be a book for a person who is in a domestic abuse situation, would make them think about things.
Norman wrote her story and I guess this is a rewrite of the original. Having never read the original, I read this one with tears in my eyes and tissues on my lap. I think it was very poignant and heartbreaking for me since I also am a survivor of DV and I also wrote my own story, but fictionalized it. It was very powerful for Norman to write of her abuse, and finally escape. The escape seemed to be part of what shows her strength, for her and her children, and how her life may have never been the same, or even her own. I am amazed by her tenacity for taking care of herself and her children. Norman is an amazing woman and I'm glad to share in her story. Unfortunately, no one really knows what happens behind closed doors, and this is another example of living in the horror that one may call home.
