Their love was forbidden by both their families...

Cornell James has come to Marchain House, home of an ancient and reclusive aristocratic southern family, to write the history of the house and estate. Exiled from his own home by parents who cannot accept his orientation, he is thrust into the twisted intrigues of the Marchains. There he meets Hayes, whose hauteur and dark beauty make him so different from the boys back home. Too bad that Hayes clearly despises Cornell, never giving him a second glance.

Trapped by obligation, desperate for a way free...

Hayes has spent his entire life protecting his family from scandal and ruin. Locked into a mutually loveless engagement to preserve the family fortune, he must be married within the year or watch the estate pass out of his hands. He longs for someone he can be honest with, someone he can trust. Cornell may be that man, but how can Hayes trust someone from so far away, someone who doesn't understand the dangers Marchain House faces? He tries to fight the passion he feels for Cornell, but it is a losing battle. After a stormy night of love, he has to make a decision Will he continue to serve his family, giving up all hope of fulfillment...or will he take a chance with Cornell, and risk everything he has worked so hard for?

Dark forces will pull them apart...

The Marchains have enemies who will do anything to steal away their legacy and wealth. Cornell is the only one who can save Hayes from being locked forever in this battle for the family's fortune, but how can he ask Hayes to walk away from everything he cares about? But he can't let Hayes marry someone he doesn't love, just to protect the house. Somewhere lost in the deep, ancient secrets of the house, there is an answer that can save them and allow them to love...but can he find it in time?

Last Light of Day is a 65,000-word gothic gay romance with an HEA, an abandoned chapel in the dark woods, several thunderstorms and possibly a ghost, but no cliffhanger.

The Last Light of Day A Gay Gothic Romance edition by Rachel Kane Romance eBooks

What a wonderful book this is. I loved it. I was captivated right from the start and couldn’t put it down. The story reminded me of the old English detective stories. A forced marriage to save the family estate, ghosts in and outside the closets, scheming relatives, a living-in-the-past matriarch. All the elements of a powerful, suspenseful mystery romance.
Rachel has written a truly enchanting story with a strong plot, that kept me on the edge of my seat. Her descriptions are so vivid, almost lyrical, I imagined myself inside the mansion and battling alongside the two men.
Hayes and Cornell are strong, complicated characters. Both burdened by their past and family obligations. Their journey towards each other is not an easy one with all the barriers thrown their way, but their love emerges gloriously.

The Last Light of Day A Gay Gothic Romance edition by Rachel Kane Romance eBooks Reviews

Mrs. Marchain hires Cornell to write a family biography book. As Cornell meets everyone and starts hearing the stories he wonders what he got into ... but he has no where else to go since his parents are angry and in denial of him being gay. He has no money or transportation to leave so figures he has no choice but to stay and finish the book.

Hayes has many issues he must deal with .. his biggest ..admitting to his mother he's gay. He also needs to be strong and stand up to her when trying to force him into marriage by his 30th birthday in order to fulfill his father's will.

Cornell and Hayes have a lot to work through and people .. both dead and alive .. are in the thick of it.

The author did a good job involving the two men along and with bringing in and developing the supporting characters along the way.
This was given as an ARC.
I received an advance review copy of this book.

At first I had some trouble wrapping my head around the mix of old and new. I realized that I hadn't read any books from the gothic genre and while this book is a mix, I'm afraid that the straight laced manners bogged down the story line for me.

Cornell James has some trouble after getting caught with his fathers accountant in a delicate situation and comes to the grand old home of Hayes Marchain and his family to write its memoir. From the start, Cornell feels awkward and after his first morning when he wakes up to a set of loaned clothing that seems to come from a different era, he senses that his time spent at the home is going to be greatly different then anything he has experienced. Modernity has yet to settle on the house and the family that call it home.

While Cornell needs the job of writing the family memoirs as a way to escape, Hayes is fighting to remain the Lord of the manor. His fathers will states that if he isn't married by the time he is 30 then his cousin will be able to claim the family fortune. Though not about the money for Hayes, the thought of it all falling into the hands of Beau who would turn around and sell it piece by piece is something he can't stand. So he has allowed his mother to arrange a marriage of convenience. The fiancé didn't live long enough, but would the second be any luckier and will the past help or prevent the right ending to this story?

I'm afraid that I was left feeling kind of unmoved overall by this story. It could be because of my new discovery of disliking this genre I guess. The story wasn't bad, but it didn't grab me as a had hoped it would.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

And to just that (honest), I'm torn what my rating should be. The writing was good, the language appropriate for the time the book is representing. And here's my first problem the book wants to bring sort of Edwardian themes into a modern day setting. But all it succeeded in was to utterly confuse me. When exactly is this set again? 1750 or 2017? Turns out it's 2017 with protagonists that are stuck in 1750. Not like trapped in time, just their mindset and behavior. I gather that was the point of the story, but it was not my cup of tea, so to speak.
Then the next confusion What genre is this book, aside from LGBTQ? Is it a thriller? A crime novel? A ghost story? To me it was an angsty story without much point to it. Don't get me wrong, not every book needs to have a deeper meaning for me to enjoy it. But this was just all over the place, veering left and right and dipping its toes into everything it passed. In the end it was just a story of two people meeting and falling in (insta) love under weird circumstances, with a lot of unnecessary and distracting storylines thrown into the mix.
It was still a somewhat enjoyable read, though it took me quite some time to finish it because I didn't feel that urgent need to keep reading. I feel like this book could have been so much more, what with all the references to other events, etc. If it was the start of a series, I could forgive its many unexplained side stories. So I'll just hold out hope for a second part, but in the meantime I will give this three stars.
I received an ARC of this book from the author. I am so happy I did!

If you love ghost stories, with characters who live in a beautiful house set in the country, which allows them to live in a time without technology, you'll really enjoy this book! Add in a few nefarious characters who care more about money than love, more about 'social' status than love, and more about winning at all costs, you have to read this!

Hayes is obligated to marry before he turns 30 in order to inherit the house and land he loves. Cornell is sent to the house in disgrace, by parents who can't accept him for who he is. Beau will do anything to get rich...anything. Clemency can't forget about living in poverty. Then toss in Iris, Julianna, and Honoria and things really get exciting!

Please take the time to gather some refreshments, a blanket, and curl up in a big chair. You need to prepare to read this from beginning to end! You
be very glad you did!
Ghosts and voices from the grave can enhance a superstition, but they don't seem to give impetus to love or lovemaking in this tale of old clothes and fanciful dress. The plot lines saved the story and our heroes found their bliss. That's enough said.
